Dental Bridges in Colorado Springs

What are Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges are a tried-and-true solution for individuals who have lost one or more teeth. This dental procedure is named aptly, as it literally bridges the gap created by one or more missing teeth. Dental bridges consist of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap — these two or more anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth — and a false tooth or teeth in between. The false teeth are called pontics and can be made from a variety of materials including gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these. Dental bridges are supported by natural teeth or implants.

Initial Consultation

The first step in the dental bridge process is an initial consultation with your dentist. During this appointment, Dr. Tuttle or Dr. Bryant at Tuttle Family Dentistry will conduct a thorough examination of your oral health to determine if a dental bridge is the best solution for you. This will involve a detailed examination of your teeth, gums, and jawbone. X-rays or other imaging may also be used to get a better understanding of your dental structures.

Preparation of Abutment Teeth

Once it's determined that a dental bridge is the best course of action, the next step is to prepare the abutment teeth. This involves recontouring these teeth by removing a portion of enamel to allow room for a crown to be placed over them. Next, impressions of the teeth are taken, which serve as a model from which the bridge, pontic, and crowns will be made by a dental lab. Your dentist will make a temporary bridge to protect the exposed teeth and gums while the bridge is being made.

Fitting of the Dental Bridge

The final step in the process involves the fitting of the dental bridge. Once your custom-made bridge is ready, the temporary bridge is removed and the new bridge is checked and adjusted to achieve a proper fit. Multiple visits may be necessary to check the fit of the metal framework and bite. This is dependent on each individual's case.
